Keeping warm in a varmestugu

After a very cold night in my tent in Beitostølen, I was excited to start my trip over the Valdresflya pass at 1400m. The sun was out and it seemed like a promising day, yet the road kept being closed the whole day. The recent snowfall and some avalanches caused by some heavy winds made the roads impassable. I was very set up and worried of a second cold night up in Beitostølen and so I went to the tourist information and asked for alternatives. They were incredibly friendly, proposing a relatively cheap accommodation in a little hut at a local campsite, but obviously that was still above my budget and so I asked them if there was a varmestugu, a little public hut that keeps the nordic skiing people warm in the winter. I had seen it in other places and lucky as I was, there was one in Beitostølen, too. After I arrived, a family with 7 kids joined me for the day. They started a little fire inside the hut, making fresh waffles and hot chocolate and offering me both.
In the evening I pulled out my sleeping bag and my inflatable mattress and had a comfortable night, thanks to all these nice Norwegians and the little hut.
